Q. Compared to your previous drama, “Dream High”, your
character in “You’re the Best, Lee Soon Shin” has more complicated
emotions. What do you find challenging about emotional acting?
IU: My character in the drama has a range of emotions, so I
faced some difficulties, but the senior actors and my colleagues around
me gave me a lot of guidance, so I enjoyed myself during filming.
Q. Compared to previous drams, the viewer ratings seem
rather low, but your fighting spirit hasn’t died down and you don’t
feel burdened by that, do you?
IU: The atmosphere at the filming site is really good, so our
fighting spirit didn’t die down. When I was promoting as a singer, many
young people would go “IU!” as they recognised me, but recently, adults
went “Lee Soon Shin!” when they recognised me, so it feels really great.
The viewer ratings on Sunday are better than Saturday, so seeing that
drives me on.
Lee Misook: The slump in viewer ratings is affected by the seasons. The weather has been good so people often go out and few of them pay attention to the small screen. Recently, I’ve been praying for it to rain every weekend. Even so, when adults see me and go “Soonshin’s mum!”, I feel the power of the weekend drama.

It’s your first time being the main character in a drama (KBS ‘You’re the Best, Lee Soon Shin’, but it made it to the #1 weekend drama.
“The higher ratings mean it’s more demanding for us, but I’m grateful and happy. The atmosphere at the filming site has become more friendly. Even with our tight filming schedule, thanks to the close teamwork between our experienced actors and production crew, it doesn’t feel tiring and I’m having fun filming.”
The main character in the drama (Lee Soon Shin) seems to have the qualities of young people in this generation, who are troubled about their career choices and paths. She seems quite different from you, since you found your calling to become a singer early on in life.
“If you look at the ‘IU’ now, that seems to be so, but if you look at who I was before I became a singer, I’m not that different from ‘Lee Soon Shin’. After I resolved to become a singer during my middle school days, I went for a lot of auditions and experienced many setbacks too. I think of the Soon Shin who fails to get a job as who I was back then. Everyone goes through suffering and uneasiness until they achieve their dream. I recalled my image in the past and found that I was able to naturally sympathise with my role. The advice from the more experienced actors as well as the help from the production crew greatly helped me to immerse myself in the acting.

[INTERVIEW] 130320 Oricon IU Special Interview - Part 1
Popular singer IU, who reaches out to a wide audience of all ages with her outstanding vocals, has released her first original Japanese mini-album “Can You Hear Me?” A girl whose Japanese seems to improve ‘meki meki’ (meaning ‘quick progress’) everytime I meet her. This time round, more than half the time, she managed to express her own thoughts solidly with fluent Japanese.
Sitting on my bed in my pyjamas to write songs…
Your first mini-album is made up entirely of original Japanese songs. My overall impression is (the sensual charm of) an adult woman. You’ve betrayed the angelic image of your releases thus far (Laughter).
IU: Certainly what I was expecting (Laughter). Even so, there were lots of challenging parts. In particular, my title song “Beautiful Dancer” was sang in a R&B style. It’s the first time I’m singing R&B, so I wasn’t sure how to express myself. I was initially at a loss. Besides, the chorus really appears a lot (I know right… and it looks deceptively similar each time but like the last line would be different so it was really confusing to tl). The chorus was all in my voice and it was like never-ending, it was the first time in my life that I felt tired from singing (Laughter). Halfway through, I felt like asking someone else to help me out (Laughter), but when I listened to the completed song, I truly felt that it was a good thing I sang through it all by myself.

“1 Year since Japanese Debut. Real thoughts.”IU is always striving to show her best and consistently putting in her best effort. In an instant, a year has passed and now she shares her thoughts looking back on the past year.
- It’s been a year since your Japanese debut. Looking back, how has the year been for you?
In response to the support from my fans and family, I’ve been constantly advancing towards my own goal. I was looking forward to my Japanese promotions, although I felt slightly nervous about it, but all my fans have been really warm and… I really like giving people surprises but I’ve only been getting surprises from everyone (laughs). Whenever I come to Japan, there are always fans meeting me at the airport, writing me letters and messages in Korean, I realized then, “So there are people waiting like this for me” and that made me very happy. They are all my precious treasures. Thanks to all of you, I’ve had an excellent year. Thank you. Also, compared to a year before, I feel like I have developed in a different way, but at the same time, my confidence to do what I want to do has increased. For example, I want to do more of the live performances that I like, sing more new songs, and have more opportunities to meet all my fans. Therefore, I am taking lessons everyday now. I’ll definitely want to release new songs soon and put on more live performances, so please look forward to that.

1. What is singing to IU?
- Something happy. To me, singing really makes me feel the happiest.
2. What does live performance mean to IU?
- Students do their best to prepare for exams, right? I do my best for my live performances. I get nervous singing in front of the audience… how should I put it… it feels like I’m taking an exam every time. Even so, I get a lot of strength from it and it’s a happy exam.
3. Something that has made you feel really touched?
- When I was in Fukuoka! There were so many fans waiting outside, I was so touched. I never expected so many fans to be waiting for me in Japan and was rather taken aback.

What sort of song is your debut song Good Day?
It’s the Japanese version single of my own Korean hit song. Even so, compared to the Korean lyrics, the girl is a bit younger and sings about her feelings for a guy older than her.
When did your dream to become a singer begin?
I had the opportunity to perform on stage in the 3rd year of middle school and I enjoyed it very much, and then I went for a lot of auditions.
How do you feel looking back now at all the awards you have received so quickly since your debut?
I felt nervous to be sharing the same stage as my seniors during the award ceremonies. Whether I receive the award is of no real concern to me, but it was a really special experience for me.
How was your showcase prior to your debut?
Firstly, since I hadn’t debuted yet, I was really taken aback to find all the seats filled and was really glad that everyone gave warm responses too. Not only was there a wide age range, when I asked the audience, “You’re happy right? You’ll be feeling sad after this?” there was no reaction, which startled me slightly!(lol.. quiet Japanese audience?) But I heard later that the Japanese respond by giving applause (Laughs).
How did you feel when your Japanese debut was confirmed?
To be honest, it still doesn’t feel like reality yet. But the showcase turned out to be above my expectations, so I feel more confident now. Unlike my Korean debut, I hope to slowly and steadily “step up”.
What’s your dream as an artist?
I have very high expectations for myself, so I have no desire to make it big right away. I’m still far from my goal right now. Thus far, there’s no performance that I truly felt satisfied with my singing yet.
What message would you like to convey through music?
When I sing, the first thing that comes to my mind is my emotions. It may not be right for me to say that I put my listeners in second place, but that really comes first.
Your favourite fashion style?
I like the casual Rakuchin style. Right now, I feel like wearing fluffy knitwear. Because In spring, I want to show a cute image ♥ But I’m still learning about style everyday!
What type of boys do you like?
Nice ones. As for Japanese artists, it would be Oguri Shun and Koike Teppei.

IU's 3-level high note left the 30,000 strong Japanese in awe.
Prior to the release of her Japanese debut single 'Good Day', IU began her Japan promotions starting with her performance at the "Tokyo Girls Collection 2012 S/S" fashion event held at Yokohama Arena today.

Prior to the release of her Japanese debut single 'Good Day', IU began her Japan promotions starting with her performance at the "Tokyo Girls Collection 2012 S/S" fashion event held at Yokohama Arena today.
The moment IU appeared from behind a dark screen, cheers from Japanese fans who had been anticipating her performance could be heard and shot of her fan holding up a placard appeared on the screen.
Dressed in a cute black and white mini-dress, IU sang the Japanese version of "Good Day". Even Japanese fans who hadn't heard of IU before became interested and were asking, "Who's that?", "Was that live?", after IU sang the 3-level high note in 'Good Day'.
IU gave a steady performance in front of an audience of over 30,000, showcasing her unique charm. Furthermore, after the song, she made an appearance on the runway, alongside other top Japanese models, and receiving a warm applause from the audience.
Prior to her debut, the Japanese media has reported that, "IU, the female solo singer who shares the status of the nation's little sister with Kim Yuna, has arrived" and is a rising Hallyu star in the spotlight.
Also, during the time when more than 200 media gathered in the press room, cries of "IU", "IU" could be heard everywhere.
Meanwhile, at this year's Tokyo Girls Collection, other than IU, Kara also appeared as a special guest and After School's Nana also made another appearance on the show as a main model.

Every day, there are so many articles about IU that one could create an article just about IU breathing. Like how they always say she's a real big hit. How did the world become so centered on IU?
I wanted to become a celebrity since I was young. The reason simply being that I liked getting attention from other people. The small dream that I had dreamed about coincidentally became real through one event. When my PE teacher told me, 'You, Lee Jieun come out and sing one song!' as a punishment for talking too much, that was my moment. To the 14-year old student that sweetly sang Joo Hyunmi's <Crush>, my teacher scolded me saying "I told you to sing as a punishment, why are you enjoying it so much." and asked me if I wanted to sing at a sports competition a few days later. To me, my debut performance was singing at the sports competition. After singing, I felt exhilarated, getting applause from of many people. Right then I thought, 'Oh, I should become a singer.'
Starting from 8th grade, I officially started going down the road to become a singer. Searching on Internet cafes, I went to audition by myself. After diligently going for auditions, I sadly didn’t pass all 20 of them. Although I didn't even get to hear why I didn't pass, I didn't get discouraged. Since the evaluator would be focusing on my singing, it gave me a feeling that I was at my own performance so that made going to auditions itself fun. I kept on thinking that the result wouldn’t matter because even if I fail that time, I would still try to become a singer. This was IU's debut history that she had revealed through a TV interview up until now.
In reality, people can easily look up IU's 2007 audition video for one of the biggest entertainment companies. The girl that sincerely stated then, "I'll begin now". In the end, however, she did not pass. Initially, the experts and the public could not see IU's true value. Although she had debuted, the response to her song <Boo> from her first full album "Growing Up" was lukewarm. [Note: <Boo> was the song from her first album that she promoted, but IU actually debuted with "Mia".] However after singing <Nagging> with 2AM's Im Seulong and <It's You> with Sung Sikyung, IU had released her 3rd mini album "Real" and like the title song "Good Day", she really had a good day. The part during the chorus where IU went up the notes by ½ an octave at a time, the 3-level high note, was so popular that it became the most searched topic on search engines. With the 3-level high note, people became aware of her existence and singing skills.
