Netizens select IU as celebrity they would most want to give New Year’s money to

Singer IU was selected as the #1 celebrity whom fans would like to give ‘saebae / New Years‘ money to.

It is a customary tradition in Korea for children to ‘bow’ to their elders for New Year’s, wishing them great health, prosperity and blessings for the new year. Adults then respond to these children by handing them ‘saebae-don’, or cash-filled envelopes.

Women’s portal site Mimint.com recently conducted a survey, asking netizens which celebrity they would most like to give ‘saebae-don’ to. The survey was conducted from the 28th of last month to January 9th, and a total of 668 netizens cast their votes. IU came in at first place, while singer Lee Seung Gi was a close second.

IU earned 22.3% of the votes, living up to her title as the nation’s sweetheart while Lee Seung Gi earned 20.5% of the votes, Yoo Seung Ho was 3rd with 17.4%, Kim Saeron was 4th with 15.1%, and Song Joong Ki rounded out the top 5 with 13.2%.

In terms of giving, MC Yoo Jae Suk was selected as the #1 male celebrity who would most likely give the most ‘saebae-don’ with 56.9% of the votes, followed by Lee Soon Jae (11.2%), Jung Jun Ha was 3rd (11.1%), Cha Seung Won was 4th (10.9%), and Han Suk Kyu was 5th (4.5%).

In terms of females, netizens selected Go Hyun Jung as the female celebrity who would most likely give the most ‘saebae-don’, and behind her were Lee Young Ja (24%), Lee Hyori (18.6%), Lee Kyung Shil (10.8%), Lee Mi Sook (8.1%), Choi Ji Woo (4.5%), and Kim Tae Hee (3.3%).

79% of the voters were female, 21% were male, 35.8% were in their thirties, 28.7% were in their twenties, 20.1% were in their forties, 7.6% of the polled users were under 20 years old, 5.7% of voters were in their fifties and 2.1% were over 60.
